After “Holmes & Watson” closed, I immediately plunged into a whirlwind project: directing “Companions” by Rob Bola for MCCT’s One-Act Showcase. This poignant play, crafted by a gifted local writer and filmmaker, delves deep into the realms of human connection, loneliness, and the challenges of aging.

Given the constraints of community theatre, we had a mere 10 days of rehearsal and a few days of tech to bring this story to life. The time crunch was intense, but the dedication and prowess of the cast made all the difference. Their commitment to their roles, especially in such a short span, was nothing short of remarkable.

Wearing multiple hats became the norm for me during this production. In addition to directing, I took on the roles of stage manager, props manager, and set designer. While the set was minimal due to the showcase style, it was still impactful. Crafting the props was an enjoyable challenge, adding another layer to the storytelling.

But the heart of this experience was the privilege of directing. Collaborating with the actors, exploring their characters’ journeys, and blending our collective insights was exhilarating. Our combined efforts truly propelled the narrative, resulting in moments of laughter, sorrow, and joy. The feedback from our audiences was deeply touching; many were moved by the storytelling, a testament to both the brilliant writing and the exceptional talent of our actors.

To everyone who supported local theatre and experienced the magic of “Companions,” a heartfelt thank you. Your enthusiasm and presence were invaluable. For those who missed it, I hope life offers you moments of genuine companionship, where simple interactions leave profound imprints.

Reflecting on this journey, I’m astounded by what we achieved in just 10 rehearsals. It was an incredible feat, and I’m eager to dive into directing once more, embracing the challenges and joys it brings.
